2 of my greatest traveling experiences are from Cuba 15 years ago and Kenya last year! I felt how they live, lived with them, understood them, connected with them. Traveling for me, is not staying at a nice hotel and having great shopping or food. I find it much more educational and exciting when I see and feel the local life, talk with them, stay at their place, connect!
I welcome you to read about the trip in Kenya HERE.
While living in the USA, I often felt America is so big and strong that many Americans travel in their country and less overseas. I can understand it is much longer time travel and more expensive. When traveling outside of our own culture/boundaries/language, we feel “small” and have to connect to other senses to communicate. Just a wonderful experience!
While living in Israel, I took my young kids to the biggest Ethiopian celebration so we can all learn about their food, dance, way of celebrate. We were very different there from the mere fact of color, but we learned a lot and I truly believe we learn much more about life and about our capabilities when we meet with different people.
This is my personal way of teaching geography to kids!
This is what I encourage at home, to embrace the different ones, and hope my children will be open to anyone, from any culture, religion or race because we are all people and we all have this need to connect!
By helping your child understand and respect similarities and differences you will also help your child to understand who he is in the context of your race, ethnic group, culture, religion, language and familial history. In so doing, you will provide your child with personally meaningful information and also introduce concepts from anthropology, history, religion, geography, etc
So here are my 8 selected toys that teach Geography for kids, culture, countries, cities in USA and around the world.
