Developmental Milestones:

Milestones are divided into five main areas: physical growth, cognitive development, emotional and social development, language development, and development of sensory and motor.

Most people, psychologists or doctors use those milestones to check if development and growth are correct and in range.

I use these milestones to help me choose the best gifts for each age group, and they help me keep track of what skills my children are working on with each toy they own.

Most 7 year old children will demonstrate:

1. Sensory and Motor Development

• The synchronization between the hand-eyes is well-established. This makes movements that require large muscles, such as swimming or climbing more organized.
• Preforming basic gymnastic movements, including somersaults.
• Properly applied safety secateurs.
• Drawing 12-parts of a human when asked.
• Writing their name using a pencil.

• At 7, children begin understanding that letters reflect the sounds that shape words.

5. Emotional and Social Development

• Children become more conscious and open to other people’s feelings during this milestone. That trait is known as empathy.
• At 7 your child will establish friendships, usually with people of the same sex.
• Sometimes they play in bigger groups, but they also develop a need for time alone.
• At 7 years old a child can begin showing signs of self critique, and knowing where they need to improve.
• More worries; might have a weaker self-confidence
• Children have a habit of complaining at this age; they have strong emotional responses
• At age 7 a child better knows the difference between right and wrong
• They are less likely to place blame whenever they lose in a game or any activity.
• Waits for their turn in tasks and playing activities.
• They begin feeling a sense of shame and embarrassment.
• At age 7, its not uncommon for children to begin to cope with some anxiety they had when they were younger, but they may still be frightened by uncertain things. Going to a new school for example can be a huge stress for a 7-year-old. Many children also fear that their parents or other adults are in trouble. They’re generally concerned about other people’s opinions and wellbeing.
